There’s a saying here in the mountains: ‘God is everywhere, but he lives in Constanza.' You can see why: set in a fertile valley and walled in by towering mountains, it’s a breathtaking spot more akin to the Colorado Rockies than palm-fringed tropical beaches. Dusk, especially, is awesome – as the sun sets behind the peaks, a thick mist sinks into the valley floor.

This is the capital of industrialized agriculture in the DR: 80% of fruit and vegetables and 75% of flowers are grown on farms around here. The industry dates back to the 1950s, when Japanese farmers were invited here by dictator Rafael Trujillo. Trujillo hoped that, in return for receiving superior farmland at dirt-cheap prices, the 50 Japanese families would convert the fertile valley into a thriving agricultural center, which they did. The vast majority of the families have since returned to Japan, but their legacy lives on.
